On April 2, 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth forced Army Chief of Staff General Randy George to resign effective immediately — during an active war with Iran, on day 34 of Operation Epic Fury.
George was a career military officer, West Point graduate, infantry veteran of the first Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He was nominated for the role in 2023 by President Biden and was removed before completing his four-year term. No specific reason was given for his removal.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed George “will be retiring from his position as the 41st chief of staff of the army effective immediately.” An unnamed senior defense official told CBS: “We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the army.”
George's replacement: Army Vice-Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve. Parnell's description of LaNeve was revealing: “a battle-tested leader completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault.” Not trusted to defend the nation. Not trusted to lead the Army. Trusted to carry out the administration's vision “without fault.”
Two other army officials were also removed: Gen. David Hodne (Army Transformation and Training Command) and Maj. Gen. William Green (Chief of the Army Chaplain Corps). Since entering the Pentagon, Hegseth has fired more than a dozen senior military officers, including the chief of naval operations and the Air Force's vice chief of staff.
Axios reported that the firings “blindsided military leaders” and generated concern about “implications for the war in Iran.” A defense official called it simply: “It's insane.” George's dismissal was motivated by “clashing personalities,” not disagreements over Army direction — fired for not getting along with the Fox News host running the Pentagon.
The replacement is even more troubling than initially reported: LaNeve was previously a personal aide to Hegseth — not just a trusted general, but Hegseth's own former staffer. The firings come while elements of the 82nd Airborne Division are deploying to the Middle East, with the Army responsible for integrated air-and-missile defenses in an active war zone.
A Fox News host with zero Pentagon experience is purging career military leaders during a war he is managing — replacing them with his own former aides, while defense officials call it insane.
