On April 29, 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Joint Chiefs Chair Gen. Dan Caine, and Pentagon CFO Jules 'Jay' Hurst testified before the House Armed Services Committee — the first time Hegseth had appeared in Congress since Operation Epic Fury (the Iran war) began on February 28. The Pentagon disclosed for the first time that the war has cost $25 billion to date, mostly in munitions, with a $200 billion supplemental request being prepared for the White House. Hurst: 'Approximately, at this day, we are spending about $25 billion on Operation Epic Fury, most of that is in munitions.' Casualties to date: 13 American service members killed, 400 wounded.
The hearing escalated into what The Independent called 'a dramatic unraveling.' Asked by Ranking Democrat Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) for the Pentagon's strategy now that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and Iran's nuclear program is intact, Hegseth replied: 'I take issue with the premise of the question.' Smith pressed: 'OK. What's the plan?' Hegseth pivoted to praising Trump's 'courage and intellect.' Smith asked again: 'What are we going to do?' Hegseth: 'You have to stare down this kind of enemy.' Smith yielded after Hegseth refused to give a substantive answer.
In between exchanges, Hegseth asserted: 'The biggest adversary we face at this point are the reckless, feckless and defeatist words of congressional Democrats and some Republicans.' Members repeatedly returned to the line over the next 40 minutes. Smith later: 'Wish fulfillment is not a strategy…we have sidelined the entire world' and pushed aside diplomacy 'in favor of two real estate guys.' Smith also noted Iran's nuclear program 'is exactly what it was before this war started.' Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT): the administration showed 'astounding incompetence,' caused 'immense economic damage,' 'misled the public,' and produced 'political and economic disaster at every level.' Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA): the war is a 'quagmire' and 'political and economic disaster.' Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) raised the Minab school strike that killed 120 children. Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), invoking Hegseth's 'no quarter, no mercy' soundbite: 'I'm a fan of Pulp Fiction, too.' On a vaccine question Moulton added: 'This is a softball one for you. Don't screw it up.'
Under pressure on the war's length, Hegseth attacked the questioner directly: 'Who you cheering for? Your hatred for President Trump blinds you to the truth of the success of this mission!' Asked by Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA) about taxpayer impact, Hegseth deflected to attacking Carbajal's home state — 'horrible' management of California. Carbajal: 'It used to be that that stuff worked. It doesn't anymore… I'm sad for all the people who voted for Trump. I'm sad because you betrayed them.' Most Republicans were supportive; Rep. Nancy Mace, initially skeptical, said Hegseth 'surpassed all my expectations.' Gen. Caine ended one exchange by referring to a service member as 'an AmeriCAN, not an AmeriCAN'T.'
