Republican Medicaid Cuts Totaling $665 Billion Are Already Causing Rural Hospitals to Close Across Red States

State Medicaid budgets will decline by $665 billion over the next decade under Trump's “One Big Beautiful Bill,” according to a March 2026 analysis. The cuts are already having devastating real-world consequences: hospitals are closing, maternity wards are shutting down, and millions are losing coverage.

A hospital in northeast Georgia closed its maternity ward. A community health center in rural New Hampshire shuttered entirely. An Iowa hospital system laid off dozens of staff. More than 300 rural hospitals are now at “immediate risk” of closure. These are communities where the nearest alternative may be hours away.

1.2 million Americans dropped their ACA insurance after premium spikes caused by Republicans refusing to extend tax credits. The CDC terminated $42 million in healthcare funding in Minnesota, and $242 million in Medicaid funding was paused in the state.

Senator Wyden issued a statement on “the latest Trump effort to raise costs and kick Americans off their health insurance.” The administration that spent $2 million on king crab and $98,000 on a piano for the Pentagon is telling rural Americans their local hospital is too expensive to keep open.
