NIH Terminated 694 Research Grants Worth $1.81 Billion in Six Weeks, With Minority Health Research Among the Hardest Hit

Between February 28 and April 8, 2025, the National Institutes of Health terminated 694 research grants worth $1.81 billion across 24 of its 26 institutes and centers, according to a research letter in JAMA reported by AJMC and Inside Higher Ed. About 30 percent of that money had not yet been spent when the grants were cut. The National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities had the most grants terminated, 128 and 77, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the minority health institute lost the most money. Columbia University had the most terminations of any recipient, 157.

Correction (October 2, 2026): this entry was rewritten. It said the grants were cancelled on a single day, March 15, 2025, and were worth $2.4 billion; the documented figures are 694 grants and $1.81 billion over six weeks. Its breakdown by disease area (127 cancer projects and others) and its quotations from congressional testimony and a cancer researcher could not be traced to any source, and the pages it cited for them do not exist; those claims and citations were removed.
