Trump Says He Has a 'Big Decision' on Iran: 'Do I Want to Go In and Annihilate Them or Do I Not?'

In an interview with Axios on September 17, 2026, Trump said he was weighing whether to escalate to destroying the Iranian government.

“I have a big decision coming up,” he said. “Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not? It's a big decision. Anything could happen with me.”

The remark came days before the United Nations General Assembly convened in New York, where he was scheduled to meet the leaders of six Gulf Cooperation Council states. Of those leaders he said, “I want to find out where they are and how they are doing. We have been very protective of them.”

It also came a day after he told reporters the war was “hopefully” nearing its end, which is the pattern this tracker has documented repeatedly: an end-date prediction followed closely by an escalation threat.

The war began February 28, 2026 and has passed seven months. As of the Independent's account: 18 U.S. service members dead and hundreds wounded per the Pentagon, more than 3,000 Iranians dead per the human rights group HRANA, roughly $38 billion in cost, and gasoline at $4.43 a gallon against $2.98 two days before the war began, per AAA. A late-August Reuters survey found 31 percent of Americans support the military action, down from 37 percent in March.

This is rhetoric, not an order. No escalation was announced. What it records is a president publicly describing the annihilation of a country as a decision on his desk, in the same register as his April post that a “whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” (see Trump Launches a War With Iran Without Congressional Approval, Killing the Supreme Leader, Bombing a School Full of Children, and Triggering a Regional War).

A note on sourcing: three outlets carried the quote identically, including the right-leaning New York Post, but all three were citing the same Axios interview. That is one reporting event corroborated three ways rather than three independent confirmations.

Update (September 21, 2026): three days later he said it again in stronger words, asking a Fox News correspondent, “if and when do I blow the entire nation up?” That was a second, separate reporting event (see Trump on Iran: 'My Question Is, If and When Do I Blow the Entire Nation Up?').

Update (September 22, 2026): he put the same choice to the United Nations General Assembly, asking whether to “annihilate the Islamic Republic” and “drive them into hell,” as most of Iran's delegation walked out of the chamber (see At the UN, Trump Asks Whether to 'Annihilate the Islamic Republic' and 'Drive Them Into Hell,' and Iran's Delegation Walks Out).
