Harvey L. West Jr. pleaded guilty in 2000 to five counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and served prison time. He went on to hold roles in the North Carolina Republican Party, and Michael Whatley, the party's chairman from 2019 and later Trump's pick for the U.S. Senate, appointed him to the party's Plan of Organization Committee, its rulemaking body, in 2021 and again in 2024.
On March 16, 2026, hours after the Daily Beast emailed the White House asking about the scandal, Trump posted on Truth Social calling Whatley “so Great” and predicting he would be a “FANTASTIC Senator,” one of “the very best.” Trump had originally endorsed Whatley in July 2025, before he entered the race; the March post was a reaffirmation in the face of the reporting rather than a new endorsement.
Several claims that circulated about the relationship do not survive scrutiny, and this entry states only what the record supports. A WRAL/PolitiFact fact check found that Whatley did not appoint West to the 1st Congressional District chairmanship: West was vice chair, and the district executive committee elected him after the previous chair resigned. West's role as an alternate delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention predates Whatley's chairmanship by seven years. Whatley told WITN in June 2026 that he did not appoint West at all, which the Plan of Organization documentation and West's own account contradict.
The party moved to address it from below. The Mecklenburg County GOP voted overwhelmingly at its March 7, 2026 convention to bar convicted felony sex offenders from leadership and to send the resolution to the state convention, which in June adopted a narrower version. Former Rep. Barbara Comstock, a Republican, wrote: “Team Trump just can't quit hanging with sex offenders.”
