Trump Fires AG Pam Bondi Over the Epstein Debacle and Installs His Own Defense Lawyer, Who Negotiated Maxwell's Sweetheart Deal, as Acting AG

On April 2, 2026, Trump fired Pam Bondi as Attorney General — the second Cabinet member fired in his second term. The 12-year pipeline from $25,000 illegal donation to Attorney General ended not with accountability, but with a different kind of failure: Bondi couldn't deliver what Trump wanted.

The primary driver was the Epstein files debacle. Bondi had promised revelations — telling Fox News a “client list” was “sitting on my desk” and distributing binders labeled “The Epstein Files: Phase 1” to right-wing influencers at the White House. The binders contained almost entirely previously public information. The DOJ later admitted Epstein did not maintain a “client list.” Bondi claimed the FBI was reviewing “tens of thousands of videos” of Epstein “with children” — lawyers involved in Epstein cases said they had never seen evidence supporting these claims. Laura Loomer called her a “total liar.” At a House hearing, every Epstein survivor in the gallery raised their hand when asked if they had NOT been invited to meet with Bondi or the DOJ. The House Oversight Committee voted 24-19 to subpoena her, with five Republicans joining Democrats (see The House Oversight Committee Subpoenas AG Bondi Over Epstein Files in a Bipartisan 24-19 Vote Led by Republican Nancy Mace). White House chief of staff Susie Wiles reportedly called the released materials “binders of nothingness.”

The second factor: Bondi failed to prosecute Trump's political enemies. The Comey and Letitia James cases were dismissed. A grand jury rejected indicting six Democrats. The Powell investigation was quashed. A former White House official told NBC: “No one is more anxious than Trump to get everything done immediately. He wants action.”

The third factor: Trump believed Bondi tipped off Rep. Swalwell about plans to release files on his alleged relationship with a Chinese spy.

Bondi's replacement as acting AG: Todd Blanche — Trump's personal criminal defense lawyer, who held at least $159,000 in crypto when he shut down the department's crypto enforcement team in 2025 and later transferred it to family members (see Blanche Shut Down the Justice Department's Crypto Enforcement Team While He Still Owned Crypto, as the Trump Family Built a Crypto Business), and who interviewed Ghislaine Maxwell and oversaw her transfer to a lower-security facility. The leading candidate for permanent replacement: Lee Zeldin, currently the EPA administrator with minimal legal experience.

The arc is complete. Trump bribed Bondi in 2013. She dropped his investigation. He rewarded her with 12 years of escalating positions. She failed to deliver on Epstein and couldn't jail his enemies. So he fired her — and installed his own defense lawyer to run the Department of Justice.

Correction (September 30, 2026): this entry said “the House” voted 24-19 to subpoena Bondi. The vote was in the House Oversight Committee, not the full House.
