Trump Says He Regrets Putting Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett on the Court Because 'They Voted Against Me Too Often'

In his September 28, 2026 interview with TIME, Trump was reminded that he had called his three Supreme Court appointees “merely a shell of their original selves” the week before, and asked whether he regretted nominating them. “Yeah. Yeah. What can I do? I put them in. They voted against me too often,” he said. “I gave them the position of a lifetime, and they vote against me often. They vote for me too.” Asked whether he wants loyalty from his picks: “I do like loyalty, yeah,” then, “No, I don't want loyalty. I want good decisions. The tariff decision was disastrous for the country.”

The Court struck down most of his tariffs, 6-3, in February, and ruled against his birthright citizenship order, 6-3, in June; Justice Amy Coney Barrett was in the majority against the administration both times, The Hill noted. On birthright citizenship Trump said, “it's become a corrupt business, all because of the Supreme Court decision.” Federal judges serve for life so that their rulings do not depend on the president who appointed them (see The Supreme Court Keeps the Postal Service Ballot Rule Out of the Midterms, and Trump Calls the Justices 'a Shell of Their Original Selves').
