Trump Cancels the Freedom 250 Concerts After Performers Pull Out and Makes Himself the Headliner of 'the Greatest Rally, EVER!'

As performers dropped out of the planned “Freedom 250” concert celebrating the country's 250th anniversary, President Trump suggested on Truth Social scrapping the concert in favor of a political rally. “We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers,” he wrote, adding that he was “thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World” to take the artists' place.

The performers who declined to appear included Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC, Morris Day and The Time, and C+C Music Factory. Rapper Vanilla Ice confirmed he would still perform, saying he felt “honored.” The Great American State Fair runs June 25 through July 10, 2026 on the National Mall, and Trump is slated to deliver the opening ceremony speech on June 24.

The proposal would convert a national, nonpartisan 250th-anniversary celebration into a campaign-style partisan event branded with the president's own slogan. The post came as Trump also attacked the federal judge who had ordered his name removed from the Kennedy Center (see The Kennedy Center Board Trump Chairs Adds His Name to the Building, and a Federal Judge Orders It Removed).

On June 4, 2026, Trump made it official. He cancelled the Freedom 250 concerts and announced he would instead headline “the Greatest Rally, EVER!” on June 24, with himself as the main attraction. By then nearly every original act had quit, citing the event's partisan tone, including the Commodores and Milli Vanilli's Fab Morvan, who told CNN “this is not what I signed up for.” Of the nine acts originally booked, only Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida remained, according to CBC News. Variety reported that most of the departing artists said they had learned the shows would not be nonpartisan as promised, and described Freedom 250 as an apparent alternative to America 250, the bipartisan initiative set up by Congress for the anniversary. Trump said Lee Greenwood would introduce him with “God Bless the U.S.A.” and that tenor Christopher Macchio would sing opera, while taking another shot at the departed artists: “We don't want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep.”

Update (October 2, 2026): The rally went ahead on June 24, opening the Great American State Fair. The AP reported that it featured stealth-bomber flyovers, military bands and Lee Greenwood singing “God Bless the USA,” and that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy used his remarks to slam the musicians who backed out while calling Trump “the greatest president that's ever existed in this country since George Washington.” Trump spoke for less than half an hour, which the AP called one of the shortest rally addresses of his second term. Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., said of the president, “He's trying to make this 250th celebration all about him.” (See Trump's 'Great American State Fair' Draws Sparse Crowds as He Claims 45,000 and Posts a Pre-Dawn Defense.)

Correction (October 2, 2026): An earlier version dated Trump's cancellation announcement to June 5 and called the events the “America 250” concerts. Variety published the announcement on the afternoon of June 4, and the concerts were Freedom 250 events, run by the Trump-backed group rather than the congressional America 250 initiative. The date and the title were corrected.
