On March 17, 2026, the V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg — widely regarded as the world's most comprehensive and credible democracy measurement project, tracking 179 countries with data going back to 1789 — released its 2026 Democracy Report titled “Unraveling the Democratic Era?” The findings were devastating: the United States is no longer classified as a liberal democracy for the first time in over 50 years, and has been downgraded to an “electoral autocracy.”
The US Liberal Democracy Index score declined 24% in a single year — the steepest drop V-Dem has ever recorded for the country. The US world ranking plummeted from 20th to 51st place out of 179 nations. American democracy is now at its worst recorded level since 1965, before the civil rights era established universal suffrage. Freedom of expression is at its lowest level since the 1940s.
V-Dem founder Professor Staffan Lindberg stated bluntly: “It should be obvious by now that Trump is aiming for dictatorship.” He noted: “What we're seeing now is the most severe magnitude of democratic backsliding ever in the country” since V-Dem began tracking US data in 1789. Lindberg drew a chilling comparison: “For Orban in Hungary, it took about four years, for Erdogan in Turkey, about 10 years to accomplish the suppression of democratic institutions that Trump has achieved in only one year.”
The report cited executive overreach (225 executive orders vs. 49 laws passed by Congress), the purging of inspectors general, replacement of civil servants with loyalists, judicial intimidation, attacks on press and academia, mass pardons of 1,500+ Capitol rioters, punishing law firms, and violating the Impoundment Control Act. V-Dem's official assessment: “The legislative branch has practically abdicated its powers to the president. It no longer functions as a check on executive power.”
The V-Dem report was part of a cluster of three major democracy reports released the same week. Bright Line Watch, which surveys 500+ political science faculty, found the US democracy score had dropped from 67/100 before Trump's inauguration to 54/100 — placing it “nearly midway between liberal democracy and dictatorship.” Experts projected the score would fall further to 47 by 2027, on par with experts' current rating of Israel. Freedom House's 2026 report dropped the US from 84 to 81 out of 100, making it one of the free nations with the largest declines alongside Bulgaria and Italy. Global freedom declined for the 20th consecutive year.
