The White House Tells CNN's Kristen Holmes Her Children Will Be 'Sickened and Embarrassed' by Her, After She Asked Trump a Question He Disliked

At an Oval Office event on Monday, August 17, 2026, CNN senior White House correspondent Kristen Holmes asked Trump to respond to Sen. Jon Ossoff's remark about his relationship with aide Natalie Harp.

Trump repeatedly told her to be quiet, called her “very disrespectful” and “fake news,” and described her as “a loud, boisterous person.”

The White House rapid response account then posted footage of the exchange and went considerably further. It called Holmes “a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession,” called the question a “cheap shot,” and wrote: “These scumbags are the lowest of the low.”

It followed with a post invoking her children: “Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question. They will be sickened and embarrassed to have a parent be so callous and vindictive.”

CNN called Holmes “one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House” and said “personal attacks on journalists for asking questions are beneath the office and inconsistent with the principles of a free press.” The response drew criticism from journalists and from former Trump officials.

The distinguishing feature is not that a president attacked a reporter, which is well documented. It is that an official government communications channel published an attack on a named journalist's relationship with her own children over a question asked at a press event.
