In an October 19, 2026 letter made public by Axios two days later, White House Counsel William Scharf demanded that Politico “immediately correct or retract these publications, issue a prominent and public apology to the President of the United States and to Ms. Wiles, and remove the false reporting from your digital archives.” The letter concerned three items: two Playbook pieces on October 15 and 16 reporting that Trump was weighing replacing chief of staff Susie Wiles, and an October 16 story reporting that Wiles helped set up the Fox interview that preceded press secretary Katie Zacharia's exit. Unless Politico complied “or otherwise respond justifying Politico's publications within 48 hours,” the letter promised “an immediate review of Politico's relationship with the White House, and, of course, consideration of all other appropriate and available legal remedies,” Fox News reported from the letter's text. A White House official told Axios “all options are on the table.”
Politico's lawyers replied on October 21 that the outlet had re-examined all three stories and corrected only the Hannity-interview story, offered no apology, and “will defend its journalism” against “attempts to intimidate,” Fox and The Independent reported. The White House had already revoked Politico's hard passes in September (see Trump Bans CNN, MS NOW and Politico From the White House, and the Next Morning the Secret Service Took Their Reporters' Badges). No further action had been reported as of October 22; this entry records a written threat from the president's lawyer to a news organization over its coverage of his staff.
