Trump has taken shifting positions on abortion. In a March 30, 2016, MSNBC interview he said that if abortion were banned, “there has to be some form of punishment” for women who had one; hours later his campaign issued a statement saying the doctor, “not the woman,” would be held legally responsible.
In an April 8, 2024, Truth Social video, he said abortion should be left to the states, without taking a position on a national ban. On Aug. 29, 2024, he told NBC News that Florida's six-week ban was “too short” and, asked how he would vote on Amendment 4, said, “I am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks.” His campaign then said he had not yet said how he would vote. The next day, Aug. 30, he told Fox News, “I'll be voting no,” after pushback from anti-abortion activists.
Throughout, he has taken credit for the end of Roe v. Wade through his Supreme Court appointments.
Correction (October 14, 2026): The earlier version dated Trump's “vote no” statement on Amendment 4 to Sept. 9, 2024. He said it on Aug. 30, 2024, the day after his NBC remarks, so the entry's date and that fact have been corrected. A dead NPR link and a CNBC link whose description did not match its article (it covered Florida's marijuana measure) were replaced with National Review and NPR coverage of the Aug. 30 statement.
