Diesel From Trump's Freedom 250 Equipment Leaked Into the National Mall's Irrigation Cisterns, and Interior Paid $1.8 Million for a No-Bid Cleanup

In May 2026, at least 30 gallons of diesel fuel leaked onto the National Mall from generator equipment powering temporary lighting installed by Freedom 250, the group the Trump administration created to run its 250th-anniversary events. NBC News, citing three people familiar with the matter, reported that fuel from generators at Freedom 250's May 17 “Rededicate 250” rally seeped into the underground cisterns that collect rainwater to irrigate the Mall. The New Republic, citing a New York Times report, dated the spill to May 20, during setup for the Great American State Fair, and said a second spill of unknown size followed.

Freedom 250 blamed vandals. Spokeswoman Rachel Reisner said “our equipment has been repeatedly targeted by vandals” and that “the recent fuel leak was the direct result of that tampering,” and an Interior Department spokesperson said “an individual cut a fuel line to a light tower.” A U.S. official told the Washington Examiner the amount spilled appeared to be much lower than first reported. Government records reported by The New York Times, as described by The New Republic, said the spill originated “from event-related equipment that lacked required secondary and tertiary containment measures.”

The Interior Department paid Custom Lawn Service Inc., a Maryland landscaping company, nearly $1.8 million in late June under a contract described as “mall fuel spill urgent cleanup,” according to The Washington Sun (formerly NOTUS). The New Republic, citing NOTUS, reported the contract was rushed and awarded without bidding, that officials attributed its two-month-late public posting to “the emergency nature of the situation,” and that the Park Service had sought a contractor in May for $1.1 million. One person familiar with the matter told NBC News that the Park Service would typically hold the permit holder liable for cleanup after a spill of that size, but it was unclear whether Freedom 250 or its event contractor, Event Strategies Inc., would pay. The New Republic reported that petitions asking that Freedom 250 be made to pay apparently went unheeded.

Update (October 2, 2026): The Washington Sun reported on October 1 that Interior is paying the same company almost $3.4 million more for “turf repairs from A250” across the Mall, damage the department attributes to vandals (see Trump's 'Great American State Fair' Draws Sparse Crowds as He Claims 45,000 and Posts a Pre-Dawn Defense, House Democrats Say Donations Meant for the Nonpartisan America250 Commission Were Routed to Trump's Similarly Named 'Freedom 250' and Trump's $14 Million Reflecting Pool Redo Fills With Algae and Sheds Its Paint, Then He Blames Obama and 'Vandals').

Correction (October 2, 2026): This entry said the spill happened during State Fair setup and that the government's records established negligence rather than vandalism. Accounts of the date differ (NBC News ties the leak to the May 17 Freedom 250 rally; The New Republic to May 20 State Fair setup), and the containment finding comes from records reported by The New York Times, which Freedom 250 and Interior dispute by blaming vandals. The entry now attributes each account, and it no longer says the citizens' petitions definitively failed or that the cleanup cost “grew” from an initial contract, since the $1.1 million figure was the Park Service's estimate.
