Federal immigration officers have shot people repeatedly since Trump's second term began. An early-2026 tally counted at least 16 shooting incidents, four deaths, and at least seven injuries. The dead included Keith Porter, 43, fatally shot by an off-duty ICE agent on New Year's Eve in Los Angeles; Silverio Villegas González, a father from Mexico killed in a Chicago suburb while reportedly trying to flee; a 31-year-old Mexican citizen killed by a Border Patrol agent in Rio Grande City, Texas; and Renee Good, 37, a U.S. citizen and mother of three killed in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026.
A former acting ICE director said the shootings are “a direct byproduct” of the administration's shift in tactics. DHS answered by claiming a “1,300% increase in assaults against ICE officers” and blaming “radical rhetoric by sanctuary politicians,” a figure NPR reported the underlying data does not support.
By July 9, 2026, a Guardian review of public reports put the number of people fatally shot by federal immigration officials at ten since the second term began. The tenth was Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, killed by an ICE officer in Houston on July 7. Both ICE and Customs and Border Protection have been responsible, and not every shooting happened during an immigration enforcement operation: in one case Border Patrol agents killed a man who fired on a Texas station, and in another an off-duty ICE officer killed a man in California (see ICE Agents Shot and Killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Houston Father of Three Driving to a Construction Job After 35 Years in the Country).
The count reached eleven within days. On July 13, ICE agents in Biddeford, Maine, fatally shot a 26-year-old Colombian man, Joan Sebastian Guerrero, who, according to Sen. Angus King, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin acknowledged was also not the person named in their warrant, the second wrong-man killing in a single week (see ICE Agents in Maine Fatally Shot a 26-Year-Old Colombian Worker, the Second 'Wrong Man' Killing in a Week).
A third death followed within two days: a man fleeing immigration officers in Florida was struck and killed by a semi-truck during the pursuit. After the Maine shooting, ICE leadership suspended vehicle stops nationwide, and Trump ordered them resumed the next morning, praising agents as “doing a GREAT job” (see ICE Suspended Vehicle Stops After Its Second Wrong-Man Killing. Trump Ordered Them Resumed: 'We CANNOT Give Up... THE TRAFFIC STOP!').
Update (October 9, 2026): On October 8 an ICE officer fired seven rounds into a car in the Marble Hill neighborhood of New York City, wounding Oscar Belgal, with a 5-year-old in the vehicle (see An ICE Officer Fired Seven Rounds Into a Car on a New York Street With a 5-Year-Old in the Back Seat).
