Trump Says the Quiet Part Out Loud: Eliminating Mail-In Ballots Means Republicans 'Will Never Lose a Race for 50 Years'

At a rally in Rome, Georgia on February 19, 2026, President Trump explicitly stated that restricting mail-in voting would guarantee Republican electoral dominance for half a century. “Mail-in ballots are crooked as hell,” Trump said. “For 50 years, we won't lose a race.”

This is a stunning admission. Trump is not arguing that mail-in ballots enable fraud — he's arguing that eliminating them ensures his party wins. He said the quiet part out loud: the goal of his voting restrictions is not election integrity, it's permanent one-party rule.

Trump called for limiting mail-in ballots to military personnel, the ill, and the disabled. He falsely claimed the United States is “the only country in the world” that uses mail-in voting. In reality, at least 34 countries and territories use postal voting, including the UK, Germany, Canada, Poland, and Greece. Twelve countries allow all voters to vote by mail.

Trump had no objection to mail-in ballots when he won in 2024 — or when he himself voted by mail in Florida. The SAVE America Act, which Trump is pushing, would require documentary proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote. Voting rights organizations warn this could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, particularly elderly, low-income, and minority citizens who lack easy access to passports or birth certificates.

When a president openly says that changing voting rules guarantees his party will never lose, he is describing voter suppression, not election security.

Update (October 18, 2026): at an October 12 rally in Youngstown, Ohio, Trump said that if Democrats won Congress and then the presidency, “I will be the last Republican president, because they will add about 12 more electoral votes,” and that with the filibuster ended, “we will never lose an election again because we'll have really good safeguards,” naming voter ID and proof of citizenship, according to the Roll Call Factbase transcript. Snopes rated the quote “real, but missing context,” because it was framed as a hypothetical. He made a similar argument in June on Truth Social: “The Republican Party will never win another Election. I will, sadly, be the last Republican President,” Newsweek reported.
