Trump Says 'I Expect to Be Bombing' in the Morning, Then Extends the Iran Ceasefire Indefinitely That Afternoon

On April 21, 2026, Trump reversed himself within hours on the Iran ceasefire in what Fortune called “ceasefire whiplash.”

Morning (CNBC, before markets opened): “I don't want to do that. We don't have that much time.” He added: “I expect to be bombing, because I think that's a better attitude to go in with. The military is raring to go.”

Afternoon (Truth Social, minutes after markets closed): “I have therefore directed our Military to extend the Ceasefire” — indefinitely, “until such time as their proposal is submitted and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.” The blockade remains in place.

Between those two statements, the Vance delegation that Trump said was “on their way to Islamabad” never took off. Iran's Tasnim news agency reported their negotiators informed the U.S. through Pakistan that they would not attend further talks. Iran's FM Araghchi called the blockade an “act of war.”

Barbara Slavin (Stimson Center): The extension is “a way to cover the embarrassment” that Trump was willing to send Vance to negotiate while Tehran wasn't ready to show up. “This war hasn't gone the way he expected from the very beginning.”

The IEA's Fatih Birol declared the same day that the Iran war has resulted in the “biggest energy crisis in history.” EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas: “Daily U-turns, whether the Strait of Hormuz is open or closed, are reckless.”

Iran's national security adviser Mohammadi said the ceasefire extension “has no meaning.” A Ghalibaf adviser told Reuters the continued blockade is “no different from bombardment and must be met with a military response.”

The U.S. is now seven weeks into what officials initially said would be a four-to-six-week campaign. The ceasefire extension was posted minutes after the stock market closing bell — fitting the documented pattern of market-timed Iran announcements.
