Tucker Carlson Apologizes for Endorsing Trump: 'I'm Sorry for Misleading People. We'll Be Tormented by It for a Long Time.'

On April 21, 2026, Tucker Carlson — once the most influential conservative media figure in America — delivered a public apology on his podcast for helping Trump get elected.

Carlson, interviewing his brother Buckley (a former Trump speechwriter and former Vance press aide who quit days earlier): “I want to say I'm sorry for misleading people, and it was not intentional.” He added: “You wrote speeches for him. I campaigned for him. We're implicated in this, for sure. We'll be tormented by it for a long time.”

In his most revealing admission, Carlson acknowledged: “Clearly there were signs of low character. We knew that.” But they had believed someone of “low character” could still “outperform their character” in office.

This is the culmination of a rapid arc. Tucker had invited Vance onto his show 46 times — more than any other GOP candidate in 2022 — and pushed Trump to make Vance his VP pick. In early April 2026, Tucker told White House staff to “figure out the codes on the football yourself” when Trump threatened to destroy Iranian civilization. Trump responded by calling Tucker a “broken man,” “Low IQ,” a “NUT JOB” with a “Third Rate Podcast.” Buckley quit Vance's office. Then Tucker apologized.

The View hosts dismissed it: Alyssa Farah Griffin said “He goes where the clicks go.” Sunny Hostin noted Tucker texted “I hate him passionately” during the Dominion lawsuit in 2021, then endorsed Trump anyway in 2024. Whether the apology is sincere or strategic, the fact that Trump's most prominent media champion publicly said “I'm sorry” is itself the story.

When the person who did more than almost anyone to put Trump in power says he's “tormented” by it and “sorry for misleading people” — that is not partisan opposition. That is the conscience of a movement cracking.
