Trump Calls War-Driven Inflation 'Fake' While Standing in Las Vegas With $5 Gas; Tells Tipped Workers 'You're Welcome,' Though 37% Get Zero Benefit

On Tax Day, April 16, 2026, Trump spoke at a Las Vegas roundtable promoting his “no tax on tips” policy. Gas was above $5 per gallon at many Las Vegas stations. Trump called the war-driven inflation “fake”: “We're having some fake inflation because of the fuel, the energy prices.” He said prices are “not very high.” He told workers: “I just want to say: You're welcome.”

The inflation is not fake. Gas prices have risen 49% since the beginning of 2026 (AAA). March CPI showed 3.3% annual inflation with gasoline up 21.2% in one month. A Quinnipiac poll found 65% of voters blame Trump for the gas price spike. His economic approval hit 38%, tied for his all-time low.

The “no tax on tips” policy itself has significant gaps between branding and reality. It's a deduction, not a credit — it reduces taxable income, not tax owed. The Yale Budget Lab found 37% of tipped workers earned too little to owe federal income tax before the policy and get zero benefit. The bottom 20% of tipped workers save an average of just $74 per year, while the top 20% save $5,768 (EPI). Auto-gratuities and service charges are excluded. Payroll taxes still apply. The deduction expires in 2028 while corporate tax cuts in the same bill are permanent. Only about 4 million Americans work in tipped jobs — 2.5% of the workforce.

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 (60,000 Las Vegas hospitality workers) pushed back. Union steward Joe Spica: “Something has to change, and it has to change fast. The policies of this administration are hurting Las Vegas.” Senate Majority Leader Cannizzaro: “There will be fewer tips, fewer shifts and fewer jobs. The tip tax break won't mean much if there's no one at the gaming tables.”

Five Republican strategists told Reuters they fear “the White House has lost control of the affordability debate.”
