Trump Amplifies a Post Calling for 'Televised Military Tribunals' for Liz Cheney, and Another Naming 15 Officials Who 'Should Be Going to Jail'

On Sunday, June 30, 2024, Trump amplified a post on Truth Social, created by another user, that read: “ELIZABETH LYNNE CHENEY IS GUILTY OF TREASON. RETRUTH IF YOU WANT TELEVISED MILITARY TRIBUNALS.”

The same day he amplified a second post showing photographs of 15 current and former elected officials under the caption “THEY SHOULD BE GOING TO JAIL ON MONDAY NOT STEVE BANNON!” Those pictured included President Biden, Vice President Harris, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Vice President Mike Pence, and members of the House select committee that investigated the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

Cheney answered on X: “Donald - This is the type of thing that demonstrates yet again that you are not a stable adult, and are not fit for office.”

The mechanism named in the post does not exist for these people. Military tribunals try enemy combatants and military personnel; they have no jurisdiction over civilian political opponents. What was being amplified was not a legal proposal but the image of one.

Asked for comment, a Trump campaign spokesperson did not address the posts, pointing instead to what she called the January 6 committee's “political persecution” of Trump. At the time Trump had been convicted of 34 felony counts and faced 54 more charges across three other cases.
